Chapter 29
âYou look pretty. Where are you off to?â Caitlinâs father was sitting in the kitchen, drinking a bottled water and working on his laptop.
âThanks. Iâm off to Bethâs and then to Nancyâs party.â
âOh, right. You mentioned that last night.â Her father had picked her up at the airport and theyâd shared a pizza at home before sheâd headed out to meet her friends.
âAre you working?â Her father was a workaholic but he usually took most of the weekends off.
âJust checking email. We have a new case, a big one. Itâs been busier than ever.â He looked like he was going to add âwith your mother gone,â but thought better of it. Caitlin guessed that he hadnât hired any additional attorneys yet, as she knew he was hoping her mother might change her mind about going back thereâabout everything.
âAre you doing anything tonight?â He was still wearing his gym clothes.
âLinda and I are going to dinner and a movie. Iâm sure Iâll be home before you, though. We can catch up later and you can tell me if the party was worth flying home for.â He grinned. âOf course, Iâm thrilled that youâre here. Canât wait until youâre back permanently. Itâs been quiet here this summer.â
Caitlin felt both a bit sorry for him and annoyed at the same time. It was his fault theyâd left.
âI have to run, Dad. Iâll see you later.â
When Caitlin reached Bethâs apartment, she knocked and Beth hollered for her to come in.
âIâm upstairs. I canât decide what to wear. I need your help.â
Caitlin made her way upstairs. Beth lived in an old town house in the historic district of Charleston. It was a great location. They could walk to Nancyâs party, and if they wanted to they could stop at any of a dozen restaurants for a drink either before or after the party. Bethâs father owned the building and had given the town house to Beth and her husband, Spencer, as a wedding present. Spencer was out of town for the weekend with his college buddies for a golf trip. Caitlin liked Spencer, but she was glad he was away this weekendâit was nice to spend the time with Beth alone and catch up.
She walked into Bethâs bedroom. She was wearing a very pretty bright pink Lilly Pulitzer sleeveless dress and had two other dresses and a pair of jeans and a navy sweater on her bed. She turned to Caitlin and made a face.
âIâm not loving anything. What do you think?â
âYou look gorgeous. Those other dresses are pretty, too. But the pink really flatters you.â
Beth smiled. âOkay, Iâll go with it then. Thank you! Letâs head downstairs. I just opened a bottle of pinot grigio. We can have a glass before we go.â
When they reached the kitchen, Beth poured them each a small glass of wine. They took them outside onto her balcony, which overlooked the busy street. It was fun to sit and watch people walk by as they sipped their wine and speculated about the night ahead.
